“Are you crucified?”

“Are you crucified?” isn't a question that you hear everyday. In fact, you probably clicked on this link out of morbid curiosity. Maybe you'd say, If I was crucified, then I would be dead; how could I be reading this if I was dead? That all depends on what you are dead to? The question as to whether or not you are crucified carries deep significance.

The apostle Paul said, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20).  What the great apostle was saying was not cryptic, but rather straight forward.

This statement of Paul's is talking about slavery.  Talk to the honest alcoholic and he will tell you that he is a slave to the bottle.  Talk to the forthright drug addict and he will say that the needle is his master.  We are helplessly bound to addictions and dependancies, whether it be substance abuse, social pressures, or fears.  Jesus said, “Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” (John 8:34).  The question then is:  Have you sinned?  If so, then you are a sinner and a slave to sin according to Jesus.

Since all are slaves of sin, how can we be free?  How can we be liberated from this evil master?  The apostle Paul later in Galatians wrote, “Those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” (5:24).  As a born-again Christian you can be free of this chain.  It is by this relationship with God we are able to say “the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Gal 6:14).  See for yourself what God has to say in His Word.  Start with reading the Gospel of John.  It is in this gospel that Jesus declares that “you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (8:32).
