Not too long ago I was asked why God sends people to hell. The guy who asked me this was surprised by my answer, “God doesn’t send people to hell. People choose hell.”
I had to explain what I meant by such a statement. God is just. Let me ask a question: What is the opposite of justice? Corruption. This is important as we look at our lives. Every one of us has sinned. Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes. But because God is not corrupt, He must do what is just. That means He has to give us what we deserve. “The wages of sin is death” says Romans 6:23. That means what I earn for my sin is death. This is referring to a spiritual death (separation from God for all eternity or hell).
The issue is not how much you have sinned. The issue is, “Have you sinned?” The obvious answer is “yes”. We are all guilty of sin. And since God is just, our sin must be paid for. Now, who is going to pay for your debt of sin? The price is death. None of your friends or family can do it. Why? They have their own debt to pay. You cannot die twice. Being a good person doesn’t pay it. This may make it look like your sin is gone, but it is just sweeping it under the rug. Hiding it isn’t good enough. It must be removed.
There are two possibilities. First, you can pay for your own sins and be separate from God and all that is good for all eternity. Or, you can allow Jesus to pay the price for you. He had no debt to pay Himself, that means He is the only person who could ever possibly pay your debt. God requires payment. That is justice. But God is willing to allow His Son to make the payment. That is love.
The Bible says that “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”(Romans 10:9). That means you can have your sin removed right now. All you have to do is pray that God would take control of your life. Here is a prayer you can pray in your heart. If you pray this with your whole heart believing, then you can know that you have eternal life.
Father, I confess that I am a sinner. Thank You that You sent You sent Your Son to suffer and die for me. I believe that You gave Your only begotten Son to pay the price I could not pay so that I can have everlasting life with You. I believe that you not only died, but rose again three days later. I believe that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. I now turn away from my sin and ask that You forgive me. Come into my life by Your Holy Spirit and write my name in Your Book of Life. I now confess You as my personal Lord and Saviour. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
